The Ultegra CI4+ 5500 has a lightweight, compact body and a long-cast spool. The SuperSlow 5 oscillation lays line evenly and increases casting distance. The price of the Ultegra CI4+ 5500 is $319.

Shimano Aero Technium XSC features Shimano X-Ship gearing for smoothness and efficiency. This reel also features super slow oscillation for outstanding line lay and propulsion line management system for great castability. This is the ultimate surf casting reel with Aero Wrapp II, Instant Drag, and CF Gear technologies.

  • X-Ship: Positioning the pinion gear close to the center line of the large diameter drive gear, more power is transferred from the handle to the rotor, the pinion gear is supported by 2 Shimano A-RB roller bearings to create more stability
  • Aero Wrap II: is a worm gear oscillation system with specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds. This provides great uniform line lay to reduce loss of energy during the cast

Capable of producing 15 to 34 pounds of drag at strike, Okuma’s new Andros A reels now employ the Dual Force Drag system from the company’s Makaira line. That system reduces side loading and handles binding under heavy settings. The A reels include upgrades such as a stainless, ratcheting drag plate, machined-aluminum shifter gear housing and extended handle length. Okuma also introduced three new sizes of Andros reels with the A series: A-12IIa, A-12SIIa and A-16IIa. • Prices for the two-speed A-series reels range from $319.99 to $389.99.

Reel Fishing 2015 - Shimano Stella FI

Shimano brings new technology to its high-end flagship spinning-reel series with four new Stella FIs. The Micro Module gear system adds extra smoothness by shrinking the size of the gear teeth on the pinion and drive gears, while increasing the actual number of gear teeth. Shimano also uses a new anti-reverse stopper bearing to reduce friction and employs S-Direct gear technology to improve alignment — generating easier handle rotation for anglers, with less play. The company improved the reels’ balance through a new body design, and amped up the water resistance. Stella FI reels can handle pound-tests from 3 to 14. • The reels cost $789.99 to $819.99.

Fin-Nor’s three new lever-drag aluminum Lethals — sizes 16, 20 and 30 — come with the company’s Megadrag system, which combines carbon fiber, stainless steel and Cal’s grease to create a two-stage drag profile. The single-speed versions offer 6.1-to-1 gear ratios; the two-speeds offer 6.3- and 3-to-1 ratios. They hold 20- to 40-pound mono or 50- to 65-pound braided line, depending on the size. The largest Lethals carry 675 yards of 65-pound braid. • Prices range from $199.99 to $289.99.

Top Fishing Reels for Long Distance Surfcasting

If you’re looking to increase your casting distance, then you need to check out these five best fishing reels for long distance surfcasting.

The tools of both long distance casting and surfcasting are essentially a highly tuned reel and a long fishing pole. However, don’t be fooled by its apparent simplicity—the types of rods are vast, and the reels can be extremely complex. These are two sports that are not for the fainthearted. But, those willing to take the time to master the Hatteras and Pendulum casts are well rewarded; especially the surfcasters.

We’ve compiled a list and some videos of the very best surfcasting reels.

There are two things you will find in common with all five of our selected reels. First, they each have a CT frame. In other words, they have an open cage and no level wind system. The line must be manually guided when reeling the line in. Second, a magnetic braking system is a must for a distance casting reel. Magnets provide smoother and more controlled braking than the traditional centrifugal brakes.

Bottom line is, if you love surf fishing, but haven’t learned how to throw a conventional reel yet, then now is the time. Click through the slideshow to check out our top five distance casting reels.

What is your favorite distance casting reel? Share it with us in the comment section below.

1.  Daiwa M7HTMAG Millionaire Surf Cast Reel (5.8:1 Gear Ratio)

The Daiwa Millionare is our number one pick for good reason—this model was used by Danny Moeskops when he set the current world record.

2.Abu Garcia Premium Cast Series - 6500CT-MAG

Abu Garcia has been making reels since the 50s. They are tried and true and will last a lifetime, if taken care of. The Abu pictured here is a Mag series. They are difficult to find in the U.S., so many people purchase level wind 6500s and upgrade them. The upgrades usually include new ceramic bearings, the removal of the level wind, and the addition of a magnetic brake. Many upgraded Abu 6500s have been used to set distance casting records.

3.Avet SX 6/4 MC Raptor Reel - Blue - Right-handed

Avets are typically used by offshore anglers. But, in the right hands, they are a dynamite surfcasting reel.

4.Penn Fathom Star Drag Conventional Baitcast Reel (15-Pound/280-Yard)

The Penn 525 Mag is a very common surfcasting reel in the U.S. You can’t go wrong with a Penn reel. Of the five reels that we have listed, the Penn 525 is the easiest on the wallet. This makes it a great reel for individuals just getting into the sport.
